Brand Vs Dupe: Matte Lipsticks (Kylie Lipkits vs NYX)

Hello there friends!

As promised I have the first lip stick post for you!

I wear lipstick every day. I also have long hair that will immidiately stick to my lips unless I’m wearing matte lipstick.

So when matte lipsticks started to become a thing a while back, the first brand I bought were the KIKO unlimited stylo.

This was around the time the very first Kylie Lipkit came out in the U.S.

It took a long while after that until Kylie Cosmetics started shipping to Germany, but when they did I manged to get my hands on 2 Lipkits and a lip gloss before they stopped shipping to Germany again.

If you’ve read my Kylie Lipkit Review, you’ll know how much I fell in love with the products. And now I once again have no way of getting my hands on them.

So I have spent many hours searching for dupes. And the brand and line I mostly went with is the NYX lingerie line of liquid matte lipsticks.

When it comes to Matte Lipsticks I have 3 go to brands: The Kylie Cosmetics LipKits, the KIKO unlimited stylos and the NYX Lingerie Lipsticks.

I will review them and compare them to each other individually :

Out of these three I find the Kylie Lipsticks are the best product, the KIKO lip sticks have the best value for their money, and the NYX lipsticks are a pretty good Dupe if you don’t want to spend 26€ on a Kylie Lipstick.

Just a heads up: This is a review on the product and color and a comparison between products and their quality but not between their color. These are intentionally not exact color dupes. But they do exist. For the exact NYX Lingerie color dupes of the Kylie Lipkits: A post from blogger Kasie

(nevertheless, there are swatches at the bottom of this post – just scroll down to see the colors swatched)

I think it was early 2015 when Kylie Jenner first started rocking that dark nude lipstick that later turned out to be Dolce K.
I made it my personal mission to find a lipstick that exact shade. I had to have it.

This was shortly before the very first LipKit would be released and I searched every beauty blog and magazine on the search for that lipstick.

That search wasn’t very successful so I settled for a “close-enough” color and by that discovered a treasure:

The KIKO unlimited stylo in “13 Cocoa. It’s a dark nude with a muave undertone and it is gorgeous.
It’s not a liquid lipstick, but it is matte and it does stay on redicilously long! You will need makeup wipes to get it off of your lips, that’s how good it lasts!
The liptsick is 9€ and I would say it has the best value for its money out of all matte lipsticks.
It’s a high quality product for a reasonable price.

I bought a lot of colors from this lipstick line and I believe they have recently changed the packaging and added extra colors and shades!
But like all matte lipsticks: You will need to press your lips on a tissue to get rid of excess lipstick so that it won’t clump.

In the summer of 2016 I was then finally able to get my hands on a Kylie LipKit!
My friend got me Dolce K for my 20th birthday and I was so excited!
The Kylie LipKits smell amazing and I really like the texture and application.
Dolce K is a very dark nude with a brown undertone and at first it looked great on my lips when I was a little more tan but right now it’s too dark for me to wear without looking too pale so I will have to wait until summer.
But I have to say I love the lipstick and it was the color I was looking for and I wanted it ever since it first got released (and sold out instantly).
It also lasts all day. When you take the excess lipstick off it will feel like you aren’t wearing any lip product at all while still having amazing pigmentation.

Both lipsticks do make my lips a little dry so I would advice to put on chapstick on top.

It’s a really close race because I think both products are amazing.
I am going to let the Kylie Lip Kit win this one just out of personal preference for liquid lipsticks over regular ones.

The next shade I knew I had to have was Candy K. It is a dark pink nude Lipstick and probably my favorite Lip Kit.
When I got this one I started wearing it every single day instead of Dolce K.

But again after a while I felt like it just got to dark for my nonexistent tan so I wanted to order “Maliboo”, but KylieCosmetics stopped shipping to Germany.
So once again, I was on the hunt for a Dupe.

I bought the NYX Lingerie Lipstick in the shade “Bedtime flirt”, which I would say is either a Koko K or Maliboo Dupe.

The NYX Lingerie Lipsticks have a nice texture and are long lasting. And I am absolutetly in love with the color.
I do think they have a slightly more natural look to them than the LipKits.
But: What really bothers me about the NYX Lingerie lipsticks is the applicator.
It is impractical and I really hate it. I like the Kylie applicator much better, it allows a way more precise application and is more user-friendly.
Another thing I noticed is that the NYX Lingerie lipsticks need to be shaken before using them, because all 3 that I have, had the problem that they were lumpy inside their little bottle before I even opened them.
(How you would expect very old products to look like after storing them laying down forever even though they just launched and were brand new)
After I shook it the lumps went away but I think they need to work on the formular.
They are only 8€ compared to the 29€ of a LipKit, so it’s easy to overlook that flaw.

Other than that the products are almost identical in terms of longetivity, packaging and how they look and feel when applied.

The NYX Lingerie line is a great Dupe, but when compared I would still say the Kylie LipKit wins this, until they fix the problem with the formular that gives it a lumpy texture before shaking.

All in all I am a big fan of the Kylie LipKits, because they are genuinely very high quality products in great colors and a big variety.

If you don’t want to spend that much money on a lipstick or they don’t ship to your homecountry, the NYX Lingerie Line is a great dupe with beautiful colors and a great price.

If you’re looking for the best matte lipstick for under 10€ and don’t neccessarily need a liquid lipstick , you should try the KIKO unlimited stylo!

Here are a few swatches just to get an impression of the colors, I find that they do look different and much more alike on actual lips.

But like I said before they are not meant to be color-exact dupes; I intentionally got them in slightly different shades, so I wouldn’t have the same looking lipstick twice:

KylieCosmetics Dolce K and NYX Lingerie 09 Corset
Kylie Cosmetics Candy K and NYX Lingerie Bedtime Flirt
Kylie Candy K, NYX Lingerie Bedtime Flirt, KIKO unlimited Stylo 02
Kylie Comsetics Dolce K, KIKO Unlimtied Stylo 13 Cocoa

Dupe Vs Brand: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer / NYX Photo-Loving Primer

Hello there friends,

being a college student and beauty enthusiast at the same time I often find myself asking “Is [high end brand makeup product] really worth splurging on or will the drugstore alternative do the job just as fine?

Because often times the brand Make up is twice or 3 times the price that the “Dupe” is. And there are products that you should buy from the “original” brand but many times, the formular is very similar and close to the same when it comes to makeup products.

But when you look to the Beauty side of Youtube often times (understandably) only expensive high end products are used.
There are “Drug store tutorials” but these tend to be the exception.

I have to admit if a Beauty expert is praising a certain brand product that it does influence me, even if often times they are paid to do so. Because it does look amazing on them. And I (and probably a lot of you) often times feel like I can’t archieve that exact look without the exact product.

So today I want to start a series of Brand Vs Dupe reviews from products I have used and give you my raw, honest opinion to maybe/hopefully save you a few bucks (either because you’re buying the cheaper Dupe or because you don’t have to buy the Dupe to realize it’s not good and then buy the brand).

Please note that these are just my personal opinions, my experiences might be completely different than other’s!

Today I want to start this Blog Series with Primers:

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (Brand) – 34€

NYX Photo-loving Primer (Dupe) – 12 €

KIKO Mat Base Corrector (Dupe) – 9€

I want to start off with the cheapset one: The KIKO Mat Base Corrector Primer, which I didn’t mention it in the title for a reason.

KIKO is an italian make up brand that has recently expanded to the USA.  I am a big fan of them and they have the most amazing matte lipsticks.
They even have a Dolce K color-Dupe that existed before Kyliecosmetics ever did.

But this Primer can not be compared to the NYX and Smashbox Primers.

It has a very solid consistency and it takes a bit of muscle power to get it out of the tube. That already is a minus in my book because the texture is just already very unpleasant for something that you are about to put on your entire skin.

It’s very hard to evenly apply, it gets very patchy.

My skin tends to get shiny and oily so I needed a Primer that promises to keep my face matte and keep my makeup from “melting” off.
It does give you a matte look but it dries out my skin almost immidiately.

I bought this one for my Prom 2 years ago and didn’t end up wearing it for the big night.

It hurts my heart to say it because I love the brand, but the Mat Base Corrector is just a bad primer.

Next up is the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, so that I have a few points to compare the NYX primer to.

This Primer costs 3 times the Money that the NYX primer does, so I opted for a travel size, to test it before committing to it.

And I must say if you have oily skin or just need a matte maker that will keep your makeup from coming off during the whole day/night you might really love this primer!

It has a very nice texture. It has a gel-like consistency and I was able to apply it nicely and evenly.

It doesn’t dry your skin out or feel weird on your skin and it really does it’s job! It’s gotten me through a 32 degree summer day without smudging or making my face shiny.

Because I did like the smashbox primer so much the probably most interesting part is coming up now:

How did the NYX “Dupe” hold up in comparison?

I think it is a perfect dupe.

It has the same texture and consistency, it’s just as easily applied and for me it was even just as long lasting!

My makeup doesn’t smudge and my face isn’ t shiny anymore. Everything stayed in place all day and all night and my foundation looked much smoother.

Update: I have been using the NYX primer regularly for a while now and I am still as impressed as I was at the beginning!

This really is a time where you can save a ton of money and still get the same result.

I hope this review was helpful!

Let me know you’re opinion or experience with these primers  and what Brand Vs Dupe you’d like to see next!
